October 24, 2023, Class Update: Native Americans and the Roman Catholic Church

Greetings everyone!

During our most recent class, the vast majority of our time was spent viewing the documentary Enduring Faith.  It was produced by the Knights of Columbus and focuses on Native American Roman Catholics in North America, mostly in the USA.

Our opening prayer was an extended quotation attributed to St. Teresa of Avila, "Christ has no body now but yours".

The closing prayer was from the 1st reading for All Saints' Day Mass, from Revelation 7:9-12.  As we learned about the practice of Roman Catholicism among Native Americans, we see that the Church has expanded to include people from many ethnicities, as this passage of Scripture describes.

We are off from class on October 31.  However, we have the opportunity to attend Mass on November 1, which is a Holy Day of Obligation.  Masses at Ascension are at 8:15 AM and 7 PM.  We celebrate the many holy people who have lived lives of faith before us, and remind us of our call to holiness.

The activity for these two weeks is to do a little research on a saint.  This activity requires a submission, due on November 7.  Please note, it is only necessary to spend 5-10 minutes on this activity.  It's a good warm-up exercise to when you select a saint name for Confirmation.

Here are some suggested websites to research saints:

This website has articles featuring a Saint of the Day:

The articles on these websites aren't too long.

Please visit either website, read for a few minutes about the saint, and then go to make a submission in the form at this link.

Please include your name, the name of the saint you picked, and in at least 2 sentences, write about what happened in the saint's life and what s/he is known for.

This website is for The Saints podcast, a series of dramatic podcasts about several saints, each in 5 parts, about 10-15 minutes long.  If you listen to all five for any saint, you get extra credit.  If you select this option, please note that in your submission at the same link above.  It helps to listen to all 5 episodes for each saint to get a more complete picture of his/her life's story.

On November 1, Relevant Radio will air programming on Saints all day long, from 6 AM until 7 PM.  (Please note that there is a half-hour break for Mass from 12:00-12:30 and for the Divine Mercy Chaplet from 3:00-3:30.)  You can listen to this radio station to learn about a saint.  If you listen for more than 10 minutes, like an entire program, you get extra credit.  Archived versions of these shows will be available a few hours after they air, so you can visit the website to hear them.

When we're back in class on November 7, our tentative plan is to continue pondering the Eucharist and exploring our identity in God.

As usual, please feel free to contact me with questions, etc.

We remain connected as One Church, all of us called to be holy, to live as saints:
All my relations.

God's blessings,
Paul
